Reading Wild Cards by Simone Elkeles, really changed my thought on life, meaning it enhanced my understanding on myself, and that sometimes it's best just to worry about the people that are around you. The people that love you, even if they don't see it. Not the people that are hurting you and causing you pain.
As Derek Fitzpatrick gets kicked out of college for letting pigs lose at the graduation, he has no choice but to live with his horrible stepmother while his military dad is deployed. Things quickly go from bad to worse when he finds out his step mom plans to move them back to her childhood home in Illinois, with her dad that doesn't want her and her sister who doesn't know her. Before Derek was counting the days before he can be on his own, and the last thing he needs is to get involved with someone else's family drama. As Derek arrived in Illinois, Ashtyn Parker, Derek's stepmom's sister, is a girl who plays football, who wants to go off and be on her own and have
nothing to do with Derek. A football scholarship would finally give her the chance to leave. So she pours everything into winning a state championship, until her boyfriend and star quarterback leaves them all to join their rival team, just because Ashtyn got voted captain, and he gets to be captain on the rival team. Ashtyn needs a new game plan, but it requires trusting Derek, someone she barely knows, someone born to break the rules. But also someone she believes she is in love with. Is she willing to put her heart and her passion of football in Derek's hands?
Between this music video with the song called "I'm Sorry" by Joyner Lucas with the song lyric "I ain't picture my life like this/they don't know what it's like like this/ Pretending I'm happy so I can smile like this/ And laugh like you/ Sometimes I wonder if I ever act like you/ Could I finally fit in and maybe and relax like woo/ Or would you feel lost without me?/ Cause honestly i think, the world is better off without me" (Lucas 1:16). And the quote ""Don't leave me", I mumble into his chest as I shiver uncontrollably, "I won't". His arms wrapped around me and I feel safe... That was my first mistake. I quickly take my arm off her and manage to get some space between us" (Elkeles 252). This meaning that Derek and Ashtyn don't feel comfortable with eachother knowing they like eachother but to scared to tell eachothe. This quote and song lyric connect because of insecurity and both are representing the symbol of love unwanted. Because they both are about stuggling in life and relationships and having to hide something that is to strong to be hidden.
