“There's a light in a woman's eyes that speaks louder than words.”

-  Arthur Conan Doyle, The Hound of the Baskervilles

Star Wars and Sherlock Holmes do not have a lot in common, but connections between the two can still be made. One can juxtapose this quote from The Hound of the Baskervilles and this picture from Star Wars: The Force Awakens. By doing this one can see how one relates to the other, and vice versa, and you can learn a bit more about each respectively.

This photo of General Leia Organa relates to the quote from Arthur Conan Doyle because the character of Leia is a near perfect translation of this quote. To put it simply, this quote describes the character of Leia. Leia in the Star Wars franchise has always been the one to stay hopeful. Even in the most dire of situations she always keeps an open mind and looks towards the optimistic route. In Star Wars: The Force Awakens, she is talking with Han Solo, her husband, and she mentions their son, Kylo Ren, who has fallen to the dark side (The bad guys) and Leia says to Han, “If You See Our Son, Bring Him Home.” Hoping that Kylo can be turned good again, even though everyone else sees him as a dangerous and formidable force. This “light” can be described as a candle that will never go out so as long as there is something, anything, to fight for.

The quote relates to the picture because the quote describes women as having something that they refuse to say outright, like a close guarded secret. This “light” is an indicator that there is more to be uncovered. And in the picture you can see a faint glimmer in the eyes of Leia, as she gives a hopeful look off into the distance, revealing that there is something that is being kept secret. SPOILERS AHEAD This is what happens in the book, as the women that is being described is said to be the neighbor’s sister, but actually it is his secret wife. This is revealed when a Sherlock Holmes comes across some documents which he presents. One is of a picture, and Holmes shows it claiming, “(It) is a photograph of a couple taken in York four years ago. It is indorsed ‘Mr. and Mrs. Vandeleur,’ but you will have no difficulty in recognizing him, and her also” (Doyle, 206). This shows us that the women mentioned in the first quote did indeed have something to hide, and this scene pairs well with the picture, because of how they both convey the same message. SPOILERS OVER

The quote and the picture both help explain more about each, just in different ways each. By pairing this quote with this picture, you can learn a lot more of each, in their own ways. This juxtaposition helps develop the picture and the character of Leia, while also conveying a message within the quote. Overall I feel that this project of “slaughter housing” was very interesting, because it is cool pairing pop culture with a quote from a book, because by doing this you learn a little bit more about each, in their own unique way.
