For the month of April, I read an interesting book from the book box called Mockingbirds by Daisy Whitney. This book was very good in the sense that it dealt with an elite boarding school, and provided insight into that situation. I always thought Fremd, and heard from some of my other school friends, was a preppy school. But after reading this book, I realized how much more preppy and competitive boarding schools are. The whole focus of this book is an underground student justice system, complete with trials and juries. That system was created since the teachers do not want to here about the problems of the students, since it would tarnish the school's reputation. The story is centered around a cheating scandal with kids using Anderin, an ADHD drug to improve their performance. This justice system is dragged into it, and comb the campus to try and find leads. What they find is shocking.

This book has highlighted how much you can get sucked into competition for good grades. I personally know how stressful it can be when you are trying to please your parents, teachers, and yourself. You get a grade back, and the first thing I do is start mentally computing how it will affect my grade. I know how packed schedules can be, trying to pack college apps full of extra-curiculars, balance a sport, and achieve good grades. Talking to my brother's friends in college, they reflect back on highschool as a time of fun, and carefree behavior. That made me realize how competitive Fremd is, and how easy it is to get sucked into things until your breaking point. Whether that point be a bad swim, or a bad grade on a math test, you just meltdown. That is how, even though I would not resort to something as extreme as cheating, I can understand the kids in this book who feel under such pressure to do something like that.

Trust me, I have had MANY meltdowns ever since I set foot in Fremd. And yes,I have had my terrible moments with math before. I think we can both relate with AP stresses cause the AP test is in....I don't even want to know...-_- I know high school is supposed to be a time where you experience fun along with knowing how to mange your times between extracurricular activities and grades, so this book really does relate with our lives here at Fremd :) Nice blog!

The past couple of weeks have been pretty stressful for me, so this blog post is especially interesting. No matter how much schoolwork might pile up, I've never considered cheating or popping pills to study harder, so it sort of makes me realize that I have it a lot easier than a lot of kids. High school doesn't have to be so centered on grades and stress because, like you said, when we look back on these years, we should remember them as a time of fun.

The end of the year gets super stressful for me too! All the homework, quizzes, and tests are so overwhelming! When everything starts pulling up, I get so nervous! Your blog showed me that I'm not the only one! Good job!

Wow this seems like a very interesting book! I have heard recently on the news about how students at college campuses are taking different ADHD medications to increase their test scores. So this is a very relevant topic to today.
