Are Movie Remakes Worth It?

Started this discussion. Last reply by Holly Straup May 29, 2014. 22 Replies

I've noticed that a lot of movies are being remade lately, like Footloose, Snow White (two different versions...really?!), Titanic, and even Disney movies! So, what's you're opinion. Which movies do…Continue

Writers Week- Phase Three

Writers Week is now more than halfway done! I personally have enjoyed the third day more than the rest so far. I think it's because I started off my day listening to some really great student…Continue

Holly Straup replied to Viviana Gonzalez's discussion Are Movie Remakes Worth It?
"I'm a fan of the originals and like to leave them at that. If you're going to make a remake of a movie, then it has to be done very very well. Unfortunately, most of the times the remakes are not nearly as good the original."

Jerry Li replied to Viviana Gonzalez's discussion Are Movie Remakes Worth It?
"Personally, I have no problem with movie remakes. While it may be true that the book is usually better, I still sometimes prefer the movie just because it takes less time to watch."

Matt Baughman replied to Viviana Gonzalez's discussion Are Movie Remakes Worth It?
"I think that some movies should not be remade if the original is a fantastic film because odds are it won't be as good.  However, some movies should be remade or rebooted because the originals were just terrible. "

Sarah Hoadley replied to Viviana Gonzalez's discussion Are Movie Remakes Worth It?
"There seems to be a huge phase of making remakes. Tron, Footloose, pretty much anything that had Arnold Schwarzenegger in the original... Some of them turn out ok, some shouldn't have been touched in the first place. I'm just scared for…"

You’re Going to Have Some Free Time This Summer, So You Should Read a Really Big Book: 1Q84

Haruki Murakami dazzles yet again with the tale of 1Q84. The audience follows Aomame’s and Tengo’s stories over the course of year, and see just how their lives converge in an alternate universe. Their connections become more intricate and mysterious as secrets about a religious cult are revealed, a young dyslexic writer goes…See More

"Just because it's pronounced differently doesn't mean it's mispronounced. Regional dialects highly influence how people speak. When I went to New York, I was told that my pronunciation and phrasing was different. I don't think…"

Viviana Gonzalez commented on Katie Gillette's blog post The Life Long Lessons Taught by the Top 5 Inspirational Protagonists
"Characters you love and learn from really show your values. I learned a whole lot from Holden too. As a senior in high school, I take his lesson more to heart now. I'm leaving childhood behind, and it is a really hard transition to go to.…"

Viviana Gonzalez replied to Tyler Raap's discussion Is the Ning Completely Necessary?
"I, personally, dislike using the ning. I don't get much out of it. It's use as a learning utility feels undirected. Each of us having a blog sounds like a great, modern idea, but its execution hasn't gone well. I'm unsure how it…"

Viviana Gonzalez commented on Matt Baughman's blog post Deception Point: More Than I Expected
"I really liked this book, and I think that it is one of his underrated books. This book is actually a book that I just picked up without really knowing much about either. I was in a Dan Brown phase, and I found this book more memorable…"

Kenzie Storm replied to Viviana Gonzalez's discussion Are Movie Remakes Worth It?
"I think some movie remakes can be amazing. They can use modern special effects to make a movie even better. But, sometimes, a movie remake can't even come close to the original and it just ruins the whole thing for me. "

Everything is Illuminated... A Novel that Adds to Foer's Perfection

Jonathan Safran Foer is a cruel man. After reading Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, I did one of those “I just finished a book that made me feel happy and sad all at once” cry’s. I’m not a particularly emotional person, so this was rare and obviously a testament to Mr. Foer’s incredible writing abilities. That man knows how to tell a story. His beautiful writing drew me in, and soon enough, I had a copy of Everything is Illuminated in my hands. When I heard we were likely to have a cold…See More

Mike Bramer replied to Viviana Gonzalez's discussion Are Movie Remakes Worth It?
"Movie remakes are kind of hit-or-miss for me. As far as I'm concerned, a movie should only be remade if the remake brings something new to the movie. Whether it's telling the story from a different perspective, updating the symbolism to…"

Gina Heinsohn replied to Viviana Gonzalez's discussion Are Movie Remakes Worth It?
"I think that some remakes are good. However, no movie should ever be remade more than two times. I also this that it is just silly to try to remake any 'classic' movies. They're classic for a reason, and and remake wouldn't do…"

The Three Reasons I Love Mulan.

Posted on May 11, 2012 at 7:00pm 1 Comment

I'm sure a lot of you have seen the Disney movie perfection that is Mulan. However, not many of you have probably realized the empowering effect the themes of the movie can have. As a small, Disney-obsessed child, I never really found  a princess I identified with. Then, I came upon the magnificence of Mulan. It was…

SLAM Poetry!

Okay, so you’re in class, sitting by peacefully, when your teacher announces the next unit: poetry. Chances are that the entire class just moaned and whined, right? I mean, who wants to read some seemingly incoherent lines written by some guy that has been dead for a like billion and half years?…
